A personal post I made to the Cannonfire Blog 19 years ago. I would do it differently today, but still apropo...

Anti-Semitism, real and imagined

Not many days ago, this column experienced a bit of a brouhaha over charges of anti-Semitism -- the sort of charges which invariably follow criticism of the Israeli government. One of our readers, Dr. David Stern, offered a very personal and interesting response. He has permitted me to reproduce his email. His words appear below the asterisks.

* * *

In order to place my comments in their proper context, I must tell you a bit about myself. I am Jewish - or at least partly so. I was born and raised Jewish, allowed to date only Jewish girls through high school, and joined a nominally Jewish fraternity in college. Judaism remained my sole source of spirituality until around the age of 30, when I discovered that the many of the concepts and practices of Zen Buddhism were more satisfying. Still, I observe many Jewish holidays, and try to teach my daughter a little about the religion when I can. I have a shared experience with other Jews in growing up with Jewish traditions and experiencing the mild-to-moderate emotional challenges of possessing an often-misunderstood identity not shared by nearly 97% of my friends and neighbors, and so feel a connection, still.

The ovens of Auschwitz had barely gone cold in the minds of the adults around me when I was born in 1959. Sympathy with the Jewish State of Israel was ubiquitous, and I absorbed much of the pro-Israel propaganda I was exposed to in religious school. As a result, I started off an uncritical backer of Israel, and was agreeable to the overall concept of a Jewish State there. The inference that Judaism = Zionism was untroubling until my late teens.

In 1978 I was a freshman in college when a local rabbi came to my nominally Jewish fraternity to round up organized support for Israel. Early in his presentation, he mentioned something about how we as Jews "owed" Israel our support. I apologized for interrupting as I reminded the Rabbi that I was an American, that this nation had done a lot for me, and that I owed my loyalty to the United States. While I supported Israel, I was not an uncritical backer of Israel's actions, and I certainly would not act to support policies that were not in the best interests of my own country. Israel had done nothing for me, and I certainly did not feel like I "owed" them anything. The rabbi first looked stunned, as though I had gone up and punched him in the nose. He then flew into a rage before he abruptly packed up his stuff and left. Some of my Jewish fraternity brothers told me they felt as though I had been disrespectful of the Rabbi -- which I soundly refuted, but not a single one expressed any disagreement with what I said. Remember that, because I think it is important.

A few short years after that incident, Israel invaded Lebanon, and I wanted to go someplace and hide, I was so ashamed. I had still not fully shaken my identity with Israel, even though I had clearly delineated limits to that association. Now I wondered how a nation supposedly founded on Judaism could act in such an immoral fashion. The continuing and intensifying mistreatment of Palestinians also led me to feel more alienated from Israel, and less inclined to be overtly supportive.

It was not until much later that I learned much about the history of Zionism and the conduct of the leaders of that movement that I had not previously known. Even later, I learned that the plight of native Jews was only slightly better than that of the Muslim Palestinians during Israel's early existence. It was at that point it became clear to me: Zionism is not, and never was about or for the protection of Jews from persecution. It was and remains a Machiavellian power move that found a way to take advantage of some basic human weaknesses and insecurities, and turn the darkest instincts of humanity to their advantage. It is only in this context that the full history of Israel's existence and subsequent conduct can be fully understood.

At this point, the Israeli government could collapse from the inside, and after mercifully limited period of bloodletting, reorganize itself as a secular Palestine, where Muslim and Jew were forced to co-exist on equal terms, and it would be the happiest moment of my life.

Obviously, I am not typical of most American Jews, but there is a continuum of opinion and level of involvement among us. I find it personally offensive whenever anyone implies that I as I Jew, I am automatically assumed to be a backer of Israel, or as concerned with Israeli affairs as I am with those of my own country. Given my own personal history, it should seem clear why that would be so.

We Jews are not unlike our fellow Americans in any fundamental way. Most Americans are woefully informed about news and politics in the United States - and our awareness of the rest of the world is and has always been even worse. While Jews generally may be slightly better informed than average, I doubt the difference is all that significant. My point is, the reason "the Jewish Citizenry" is as ill-informed about Israel's internal political scandals is the same as the reason the rest of the country is so ill-informed: The information is not prominently featured in the major media, and most of us don't care that much -- we are too involved in our own lives and the affairs of our own country to seek out additional information about Israel, or any other nation.

People who act and/or think as agents of Israel routinely use charges of bigotry against Jews whenever they need to counter rational criticisms of Israeli conduct that are not easily justified. You should wear those charges as a badge of honor, and a sign that your criticisms are dead-on. And you should not dignify them with a response - no thinking person could possibly buy that argument, and you have no chance of reaching anyone who either agrees with it, or is motivated to go along with it, despite knowing it is a lie. It is a waste of your valuable time and energy, and robs those of us who read your blog of whatever information of value you might produce, had you not been engaging in a straw-man argument with a provocateur.

You may better position yourself to avoid or dismiss these baseless attacks if you avoid making Israeli issues into Jewish issues. If Doc Elsewhere had said, "Makes one wonder if American backers of Israel are as clueless as the rest of us about these problems. And if so, why? And dare we wonder why we hear nothing of any of this here, regardless of the presence of a strong Israeli political infrastructure in the US?" it would have forced the provocateurs to INTRODUCE Judaism into the conversation in order for them to then charge her with anti-Semitism. It also would have avoided the unfair inference that only an insignificant percentage of American Jews can be counted among those not concerned first and foremost with Israeli affairs.

This moved me deeply. I was raised Catholic, but in the early 70s attended a college (Washington University in St. Louis) where about half the students were Jewish. I got to know a lot of Jews and learned a lot about Jewish faith and culture. There were many kids who had either returned from the kibbutz or were planning to go there, excited to help build a homeland. Despite the Six Day War, which demonstrated that some people still could not tolerate them, they were hopeful that peace could someday still be achieved, if they held to their ideals and faith and worked hard to win over their enemies. The Israeli government, and indeed the populace of Israel, has swung hard right since those days, and I am dismayed at what Israel, as a nation, is doing these days. This is why many American Jews cannot support every Israeli government action and policy, and neither do I.

I fully support the right of every Jew to live and practice their faith in peace and harmony with their neighbors. I condemn the actions of the Israeli government when they lose their way, as they have done with Gaza. Anyone who says I am an anti-Semite will get a fierce argument, likely filled with copious expletives.

Jeff, you are one of the few journalists I still believe in. You are in search of truth whereas most people today are in search of whatever you shove down their throats or consume on tv. If we stop for a minute and watch what Bibi is actually doing as a head of state you realize if we are not critical of his imperialistic motives then shame on us. It has nothing to do with Jew hate.

Glad to hear of your wonderful experience at Ethical Culture Fieldston School, where my daughter attended from pre-K to 12th grade, graduating in 2007. As one of my cousins once humorously put it, ECFS is for secular Jews who don’t have the heart to convert to Unitarianism😆. Anyway, she is now a 12-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, a very unusual career path for ECFS graduates.

Btw, big fan of yours. I’ve been following the JFK story since 1963, when I was precocious little snot of 5 years old. Old enough to remember the event as it happened and aware enough as a 9-year old in 1967 to have watched the famous network specials on the case and thereupon to become incensed at the obvious nonsense that they were spewing.

Keep up the good work and the good fight.

I love the use of Yiddish in the question. Jay is using middle school logic, accusing someone who doesn't agree with a country's policies of being racist against the group. It is this very fear that prevents a lot of liberals from criticizing Israel. If I don't like Mao's Great Leap Forward doesn't make me anti-Chinese, or if I don't like the Trail of Tears, it doesn't make me anti-American. It is a demonstration of ignorance

Bless the Israeli author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine for revealing the truth about the history of Israel. The propaganda Americans are subjected to is overwhelming. Almost everything we are told is a lie.

Give him a free copy of your book on Angleton. Ask him to justify Angletons treason.

It’s the best book on Angleton and his work in the CIA. It was actually Angleton who associated with the antisemite Ezra Pound.

It certainly happens to be so that anti-Zionism is interpreted by many to be antisemitism. I am charged with it constantly on Quora now that this bullshit war against Iran has started by our "Glorious Leader", Zionist in Chief Donald Trump.

Yes I have been a MAGA conservative for ten years, and voted for Trump twice. I still believe we cn "Make America Great Again," but not by fighting wars of aggression the neocon way. As I see it Trump is kissing Netanyahu's ass doing Israel's bidding...as Marco Rubio admitted yesterday.

I have already made my position plain here, that America's crucial problem in the National Security State.

I am speaking to the importance of understanding the critical issue of the National Security State that was signed into law by Harry Truman in 1947. THIS act crushed the constitutional republic by lowering an Iron Curtain between the People of the United States and constitutional governance by replacing the "Right to Know" with the military concept of the "Need to Know". Wherein critical information is classified in a series of Classifications. GOVERNMENT SECRECY was codified. And this Act spawned many agencies born of secrecy and deceit, like the CIA, and NSA. America became a Panoptic Maximum Security State out of the meager beginnings of the 'Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned of. A key moment in this long strange trip was the assassination of President Kennedy, that most here realize was a military coup d'état.

A sophisticated analysis of our current dilemma would recognize that the only sure way to extricate ourselves from this dire situation is to repeal the National Security Act. In one fell swoop that would delegitimize all of these corrupt agencies and their corporate and congressional sponsors. Of course this would be a most difficult thing to achieve without an awakening by the American people in vast numbers.

Bill, cut back on the koolaide Trump is no more a Zionist than he is a Communist Trump walks to his own drummer

This administration is making a severe dent on the security state and that is not positive The CIA, FBI and NIA have cut back hundreds of national security people

William Whitten's avatar

Trump has shown by his public actions that he is in fact a Christian Zionist.

As far as cutting back "national security people", fire them all and flush the CIA down the toilet.

\\][//

William m Gaffney's avatar

Bill, I am a Christian, as I believe you probably are I am dread to attach the name Christian in any form to Trump's name

As far as getting rid of the national security people in general who is going to "sniff" out "attacks?"

William Whitten's avatar

Oh yes, I am indeed a Christian.

\\][//

William Whitten's avatar

Regardless William Trump is a Christian Zionist despite your dread.

Who is going to sniff out attacks?!?!

Hahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!

Most attacks on American soil have been false flag PSYOPS; JFK assassination, 9/11, attack on Murrah Building in Oklahoma. All of these events involved elements of the intelligence community.

TemplarScribe's avatar

Claiming "Trump walks to his own drummer" conveniently overlooks his being blackmailed by Israel, Russia, and maybe Turkey, as well as those in his own administration (like Kash Patel and Pam Bondi) who know the truth about his decades of debauchery and other criminal activity. Look up "Comrade Krasnov," and revisit that shocking image of Trump leaving the 2017 Helsinki one-on-one with his ex-KGB handler, and admit he's NEVER walked to his own tune since Moscow ensnared him in their web way back in 1987.

William m Gaffney's avatar

Patel, Bondi, Hegseth and most of the people in his administration aren't smart enough to blackmail him You give them way too much credit

All his financial crimes are well known No one could blackmail him

As far as Russia and Israel Trump loves corrupt evil dictators They don't need to directly blackmail him

William Whitten's avatar

You must be a Democrat libtard Gaffney.

I proudly claim the title But I am also a retired recruiter. I look at the bulk of the people in the Trump administration as unqualified in skills and experience That is not a political statement but a qualification one

What did I say that identifies me as a libtard

By the way a lot of my Liberal friends say I am Conservative and a lot of my Conservative friends say I'm Liberal

Personally I'm just a pillar of normality in a world of insanity Or as Joe Friday would say, "just the facts ma'am"

I learned you have to believe in Jesus Christ to be a Chridstian Does Trump believe in Him other than some guy in the Bible?

Dwight Lyman's avatar

“I learned you have to believe in Jesus Christ to be a Christian”—

This is still true, I think. But it used to be typical of Christians that they also tried to adhere to the teachings of Jesus (e.g., the sermon on the mount). Today most Christians in the U.S. seem to consider the teachings unnecessary, even undesirable. Which frees them to view Donald Trump as their hero.

William Whitten's avatar

"Does Trump believe in Him other than some guy in the Bible?"~Gaffney

How would anybody know for sure?

So you were a "recruiter". and you actually think that qualifies you to assess the abilities of the current Secretary of War and Chiefs of Staff. That makes you an arrogant Libtard from my perspective.

This discussion is startin to bore me Mr. Pillar of Normality. Are you British?

Every demographic group except for conservatives over 50 has now turned against Israel.

Jefferson, your response was far more reasonable and measured than mine would have been, had I been in your shoes. We live in a world where criticism of a country's war-crime-level attacks on its neighbors can be falsely attributed to an attack on that whole country's religious identity, which it clearly is not. You'd need a room full of hands to count the number of Jewish people who have spoken out against the genocide Israel's government is waging on the occupants of Gaza. I applaud your restraint, and admire your upbringing. The closest I got to Jewish friends where I grew up was my good friend Ken Frandsen telling me the joke about a cricket walking into a bar that ends with the punchline, "You have a drink named Schlomo?"

I am willing to let the embers cool at the moment.

The truths I speak of will endure long enough for everyone's sensibilities to heal. I'm not hopeful for many here that healing maybe retarded by their own brand of hate. Dumb axxed Trump and his cult specifically.

Those who trashed those nuclear agreements with Iran should be held accountable. SEE: Sun-tzu, " keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Suiting yourselves, have a close look at which country-state, what ever, does the U.S. does seem to hold closest. Seems seems counter intuitive to me.

I will once again make an effort to state my over riding beliefs concerning the topic of the U.S.Israeli relationship clearly, I consider my observation as astute as any made on the topic.

The truth is many times very uncomfortable for many to digest.

Israel was solidly in the best seat available concerning and considering their interests in the operations conducted by CIA.

Why did CIA officials and stand by and not intercede on behalf of JFK. My theory backed by facts is CIA's JJA was playing international poker, foreign relations, and cheating. It is typical, to a point.

By now we know CIA could have intervened and stopped the operation to assassinate JFK. It did not. Why was nothing done? Because JJA had become compromised, his CIA was in great jeopardy of being eliminated, the direct result of their hatred of JFK and his policies.

Had he lived, Israels drive to acquire nuclear weapons which had resulted in the infiltration of the USAEC, with whom Israel was involved diverting SNM illegally from the U.S. to Israel would not have gone undetected. Ironic the diversion was discovered in spite of clandestine activities to prevent the acts from occurring.

The exact reason we find ourselves enmeshed in the current catastrophe in Iran. Something JFK predicted by the way.

Zionist Trump broke it, he and his cult now own it.

Great stuff here Mr. Morley. We all can benefit from discussions such at these.

Selah!

William m Gaffney's avatar

Excellent Robert I was on the fence about the nuclear accords until I read a piece in the CATO Institute supporting it

robert e williamson jr's avatar

WmG thanks! I actually do have reasons for my over bearing rants. I have a lot to say and I am wrong occasionally after being overcome by the anxiety driven by my impatience. I an abnormal sense of pressure to help get the current misuse of U.S. military might stopped. I'm of the firm opinion no one has any time for this B.S.!

I have lots of questions about who , why and what managed to "poison the well" so to speak and sour the deal. These unnecessary conflicts must stop now.

The republicans have irrevocably attached themselves to a ship they are sinking, think kamikaze sailors I guess. Regardless they are to be held accountable.

I do not like what I keep coming up with.

The country has some very desperate, critically mentally ill individuals in very powerful positions in D.C., members of both the current administration and members of the armed services. This situation is untenable. They must be stopped they will not stop of their own accord.

This is it. Ask yourself this question. Are you or would you be willing to let any of these people baby sit your children, grandchildren?

Just what I thought! Be safe.
