In 1960 I was a high school Freshman at Sacred Heart High School in Hollywood. I remember Kennedy’s campaign as a campaign for change. The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans. Kennedy’s appeal to “Ask not what your country should do for you, but what you can do for your country,” struck me and many in my generation. I understood the importance of service to America, and it impacted me my entire life. In 1961, he started the Peace Corps which I perceived as an exciting opportunity. Although I was still in high school when the Peace Corps began, I was intrigued by this new opportunity.
