GOP Promises to Investigate Secret Agencies
What does that mean for continuing secrecy around JFK assassination files?
No sooner had congressional Republicans finally settled on a House Speaker, than they took up the suggestion of Fox News host Tucker Carlson to create a new “Church Committee” to investigate the alleged weaponization of the CIA and FBI under the Biden administration.
This is clever branding designed to defuse Democratic criticism. The Church Committee was a favorite liberal enterprise of the 1970s. Created in the wake of revelations about CIA domestic spying and foreign assassination plots, the committee was chaired by Sen. Frank Church, an ambitious Democrat from Idaho. The committee’s thorough and fair investigation held the CIA accountable for abuses of power ranging from domestic spying to the MKULTRA mind-control program to assassination plots. The mandarins of Langley hated Church’s crusading style but the Committee’s final report remains a definitive text for understanding the role of the CIA in American life.
