The July 7 Justice Department announcement regarding financier/trafficker Jeffrey Epstein pulled the rug out from under Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, the Florida congresswoman who chairs the House Task Force on Declassification of Federal Secrets.

Earlier this year, the House Republican majority gave the task force the assignment of looking into the Epstein affair, as well as the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK. The Justice Department’s “exhaustive investigation” concluded that Epstein did not keep written records, did not blackmail people, but did (believe us, really did) commit suicide. This cursory statement effectively closed the Epstein case before the task force could open it.

Just days before, Rep. Luna had secured a big win on JFK assassination records: the release of the long-suppressed personnel file of undercover CIA officer George Joannides, a document with historical implications.

“For the first time since President Kennedy's assassination nearly 62 years ago,” Axios reported the next day, “the CIA has tacitly admitted that an officer specializing in psychological warfare ran an operation that came into contact with Lee Harvey Oswald before the Dallas killing.”

The Washington Post followed up this week with a longer report with more details from the Joannides file, showing how the CIA systematically hid the actions of the Miami-based officer involving the accused assassin in the weeks and months before JFK’s assassination.

“The revelation adds fuel to the long-simmering questions around what the agency knew about the plot to murder the president, and what else it may be hiding,” the Post said.

Full JFK disclosure was accompanied by full Epstein stonewall.

In one case, the democratic process system worked, delivering significant new information. Transparency led to accountability. In the other, the will of the people was — and is — thwarted. Secrecy breeds suspicions — of foreign involvement, of Trump’s complicity, of deep state machinations.
