Stan Salett
In 1963, Salett worked on The President’s Committee on Juvenile Delinquency, chaired by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.
That day, November 22nd, I had arranged to have lunch with Jim Clark, another Kennedy staffer. Jim was from St. Louis and also worked for the President’s Committee on Juvenile Delinquency specializing on economic development. As I recall, it was a rather leisurely meal, with no sense of any urgency. Our lunch was at Blackie’s House of Beef at the corner of 22d and M Street.
Politicos of various stripes frequented Blackie’s in those days so that it was important to have access to the latest news. At the far end of the dining room there were Teletype machines of the three major wire services: UPI, AP, and Reuters. We would get up occasionally from our meal and check for the latest news.
