President John F. Kennedy and CIA director Allen Dulles.

David Talbot’s captivating globetrotting biography of CIA director Allen Dulles, “The Devil’s Chessboard,” is a catalog of revelations about the post-war American empire. An avuncular, amoral Wall Street lawyer, Dulles took over as chief of the clandestine service in 1952 and proceeded to launch of reign of coups d'état, insurrections, assassinations, and massacres around the world, better to serve the interests of U.S. foreign policy and his corporate clients, which he regarded as identical.

Along the way, Talbot discovered where the pipe-smoking spymaster was when he heard that the man who fired him from the CIA, President John F. Kennedy, had been assassinated. On Nov. 22, 1963, Dulles was paying a visit Camp Peary, the CIA's covert training facility in southern Virginia.

Here’s the entry from Dulles’ desk diary for 1963, as found in the Princeton University Library.
