Any update on how promises to release 5 sets of documents (already a far too limited scope) has been reduced down to merely excerpts from just 1? I’ve tried keeping positive that Luna is actually committed to what she claims, and have struggled to set her abhorrent rhetoric and lack of compassion aside, but what exactly is the task force using taxpayer money to do if not ensure what should be simple and straight forward - the release of ALL jfk records. The hearings were nice, and a positive, for sure, but the release of all records will always be the goal. Every minute wasted is another minute for the agencies to muddy things further. How does a “task force” get “promised 5 sets of documents within weeks” but 39 days later they’ve somehow failed to prevent that from being reduced down to only portions of 1 of these sets (still unclear what releasing excerpts even means).
It’s not really clear what she is doing exactly, which is part of the problem. She held two hearings, yes, but everything else I’ve heard from her is about her loyalty to her party, ICE, and other Federal agencies.
Do we know if she is actually aggressively pursuing the disclosure of these documents? If her task force doesn’t have real investigative power then what is the point? She has called some witnesses to tell their stories, great. But she hasnt called anybody that can be interrogated or examined about the actual issue - the agencies’ and our government’s failures to comply with the law.
Is she issuing subpoenas? Has she used her platform to talk about how the CIA is breaking the law and betraying their obligations to the American people, in a way that exposes the extent of their betrayal, in a way that requires painting the CIA accurately so that it’s repugnant and criminal existence is thrown in its face? We know these agencies will take advantage of any good faith efforts to “work with them.” Accomplishing the objective of her task force will demand aggressive and adversarial engagements with these agencies. If the task force has subpoena power why hasnt she used it?
A task force that says they’ve been promised five sets of key docs (which is already was too low a baseline) but then sits there as that number dwindles down to only excerpts from one of these (from 5 sets to not even 1 set) is an ineffectual task force, or at least a task force that doesn’t prioritize its duties.
Luna panders to how important disclosure is but she hasnt taken the time to fully understand the egregious crimes that continued secrecy amounts to. She spends way more time cheering on ICE than doing anything that looks like exercising whatever authority the task force has in a way that treats the intelligence agencies and other agencies withholding documents for what they are - adversaries to what her task force is supposedly designed to achieve. (And if the task force simply doesn’t have the authority to make these agencies uncomfortably then it was a toothless creation from the start).
Nah, instead she is posting photos of the very special medal the CIA gave her that she is so very proud of. Proud because she defers to such agencies, she will listen to them, she won’t challenge them, she holds them in high regard. She must be terribly uncomfortable at the idea of having to even disagree with them. You think she wants to actually expose the CIA for its illegality? I don’t.
To me it seems like Luna may only be engaging in the theatre of being committed to disclosure so she can spin some tweet up about how committed her party is to transparency…but it is becoming more and more clear that this is not something she is committed to, at least not to the extent one would need to be to challenge what these agencies have done and continue to do.
It feels like in 15 years we will hear members of the task force mention how they were on it, Luna mention how she was head of it and how she held hearings with witnesses, released X number of total pages, etc - maybe as part of some debate point on how these experiences makes her qualified for whatever political role she is seeking at that time - but, unless she actually commits to being aggressive and challenging agencies like the CIA in a way that will ruffle their feathers and put them on the defensive, and put her as their adversary (not a partner)…..then ultimately what we researchers who follow this will know is that she failed to deliver on what the entire task force was actually supposed to be doing - ensuring full and complete disclosure, and not letting the obfuscation that has plagued the records act continue. So far, she may have done a decent job on the aesthetics side, she may have said the right things from time to time. But at some point she needs to get her hands dirty if she wants to ensure the American people actually get access to docs they should’ve had a long time ago.
Unless something drastically changes I do not see Luna as someone who’d ever in a million years be willing to challenge the these agencies to the extent or in the manner that would be necessary to accomplish full legal disclosure.

What can she do? Hold the CIA in contempt of Congress?
