Israeli Report: Scholar Spy Who Read Oswald's Mail Worked for Pentagon
Jewish Telegraphic Agency advances the Reuben Efron story
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reports that Reuben Efron, the CIA official who screened Lee Harvey Oswald’s mail before the assassination of JFK, was a scholar of “spies in Jewish tradition.”
“For decades, Efron worked for the US government, playing roles that are only now coming to light as secret government documents are made available to the public,” JTA reported. “His family history says only: ‘Reuben worked for the Pentagon.’”
The JTA article advanced the story of the CIA man who read Oswald’s mail, first reported on July 14 by the New York Times and JFK Facts, by adding new details about Efron’s espionage career. The dispatch, by JTA Washington correspondent Ron Kampeas, was picked up by Israel’s leading English-language news sites, including the Times of Israel, Jerusalem Post, and Ha’aretz, (which said, inaccurately, that the revelation of Efron’s name pointed to a communist plot in JFK’s death.)
